A Story to share that made me a little uncomfortable at first.

First, I assure you that this is the truth.

This photo was taken in late summer across the street from M.I.T. at dusk. For those who do not know, MIT is in Cambridge Massachusetts a mile or so from Harvard University with both campuses situated on the banks of the Charles River with Boston on the other side. I had earlier dropped off some material at the offices of Susan Hockfield, the President of M.I.T.. I wear the t-shirt given to me by my daughter attending the University of Delaware when I am involved in special activities as I like to think it brings me luck. It was such a beautiful evening & moon that I had a friend take a quick photo.

Fine ... now here is the strange & uncomfortable part ... this photo was taken in late summer before I had decided to take action on my belief that arranging a "gathering" of the many hard working manufacturing folks along with the very smart, dedicated and well credentialed individuals who advocate for their issues & concerns is needed and might be truly beneficial for all involved. Look in the sky over my right shoulder and you will see a bright moon shining. Now look straight down from the moon and you will see a bright beacon shining on the top of a building directly below. That is Boston's historic John Hancock Building.

The John Hancock Building is now the venue for our "Gathering of Heroes" celebration & event. It was not even a thought in my head when that photo was taken. I only recently noticed the moon shining so brightly directly above it as if the moon is lighting that beacon and they are somehow connected. Very ... very strange.

It gets a little stranger though ... the core motivating theme that has driven me on this mission is that I, and many individuals much more highly credentialed than I, are very concerned that as we, as a nation, lose our ability to manufacture our "core subsistence" we lose our "economic independence" thus endangering our political independence and thus our future overall prosperity. Economic independence is a grave concern.

Here's the next & last strangely linked symbolic thought, John Hancock is most noted now as the very first signer of our Declaration of Independence with the largest signature on that document for all to see.

When I finally noticed the moon's position in that photo and shared this story with a few others, they almost all gave a little smile and said "that's weird" ... which is a frequently used word here in Boston but very befitting for this story for sure. I hope to meet you all here in Boston at Mr. Hancock's house.  :-)

"The oldest written constitution still in use in the world today is the constitution of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts written by John Adams a decade before our own national constitution was written. In which John Adams says that it shall be the duty of the government to educate everybody and then he goes on to site what they are going to get from their education. He talks about the arts and the sciences .. but he also talks about trade, commerce and manufacturing. That we have to be an educated people." -- David McCullough, historian & author.

"Not only the wealth, but the independence and security of a country, appear to be materially connected with the prosperity of manufacturers. Every nation ... ought to endeavor to possess within itself all the essentials of a national supply. They comprise the means of subsistence, habitation, clothing and defense ... The expediency of encouraging manufactures in the United States, which was not long since deemed very questionable, appears at this time to be pretty generally admitted."

"The America I know must always be viewed as a land of free people and not simply a business platform from which to extract personal profit no matter what effect on their fellow citizens. We must also fight to not lose our economic independence. Economic independence assures the existence of America as a land of free people. The country I will leave my children is in trouble and I am gravely concerned. This is my oar in the water."
